As manager and consultant, Peter Burton has worked at top level both in business and in the public sector, where he has experience of policy-making roles in central and local government, and in education.  He now practises as a management consultant and executive coach, and heads a firm specialising in personal and organisational effectiveness. He had over 25 years experience in full-time general management, during which time he founded two companies and took both public, being instrumental in making and integrating several major acquisitions. He has served as chairman or non-executive director in a number of public and private companies, including the Costain Group plc.

He completed the Harvard Business School OPM executive program (Unit IV) in 1994 and gained a masters degree in Organisational Behaviour from London University in 1995. His masters' dissertation investigated the influencing tactics of non-executive directors. His continuing education included gaining a Postgraduate Certificate in Coaching (2006), and a Postgraduate Diploma in Coaching Psychology (2008).

His past public service includes over 20 years as founder-director of a not-for-profit local enterprise agency, 12 years as a district councillor, and three years as chairman of governors of a comprehensive school.  He has also served as a governor of the University of Luton (now University of Bedfordshire).
